ACCIONA Engineering prepares environmental profile for Afghanistan

05/16/2017

The profile is a basic tool for guiding future environmental policies in the country.

ACCIONA Engineering has completed the process of preparing the Environmental Profile for Afghanistan, under the agreement signed with the European Union’s delegation in the country. The results of the work were presented in Kabul on 19 April during a workshop attended by representatives from various Afghan public institutions, donor agencies and NGOs.

The Environmental Profile offers an overview of the environmental situation in the country. It includes information about the different policies being applied as well as the actions being undertaken by the different cooperating organizations in relation to the environment, with particular emphasis on the activities of the European Union. Lastly, it makes recommendations to the EU about how to better integrate environmental and climate change issues into its development cooperation.

ACCIONA Engineering assigned three consultants to prepare the report who worked between September 2016 and April 2017. During this period, the team reviewed the existing policies and Afghanistan’s environmental legislation. It also held meetings with all of the national and international agents involved in safeguarding the environment and organized the conference to present its conclusions.

The Environmental Profile for Afghanistan provides a complete diagnosis of the actual environmental situation in the country. It will help to improve coordination between all of the parties involved in this area and should be an important factor in driving agroforestry development, improving territorial regulations and making better use of water resources in a country that is suffering from the effects of decades of conflict.
