ACCIONA presents the CLARITY project at the 2018 National Road Surface Symposium

ACCIONA presented the CLARITY innovation project at the National Road Surface Symposium, organised by the Technical Highways Association on 18 October at the Civil Engineering School of the Polytechnic University of Madrid.

The aim of this project, which is part of the European Union’s H2020 Research and Innovation Framework Programme, is to develop an Integrated Climate Services Information System to evaluate the resilience and protection of major transport infrastructures to climate change.

The system designed by the CLARITY team, which will be implemented on a section of the A2 highway, which connects Madrid and Barcelona and is currently operated by ACCIONA Concessions, was presented during the symposium.

Points have already been identified along this 77 km, four-lane pilot section that are vulnerable to climate change, such as embankments, drainage systems and flood-prone sections.

Once this new system has been implemented, the indices that define the possible impacts on road infrastructures in different weather conditions will be analysed, such as precipitation or extreme temperatures, strong winds, fire risks or landslides. Europe-wide regional climate models will be used to create these indices, available in EURO-CORDEX.

Following its participation in the CLARITY project, ACCIONA Engineering now has ten innovation projects through to 2022 in the area of environmental consultancy, climate change, energy efficiency and smart cities, and is a leading player in civil engineering innovation.
