New Lighthouse in the Harbour of Valencia

Construction of the new lighthouse on the northern extension of the Harbour of Valencia, made from composite materials, carbon fibre and fibreglass with polymer matrix, by ACCIONA Construction's Technology Centre,

The lighthouse is a structure made from composites with polymeric matrix, measuring 31 metres high and with an octagonal layout. It essentially consists of two elements: the coffer that serves to house the equipment necessary for the operation of the lighting system of the beacon and the element that supports the structure itself.

The lighthouse structure consists of 8 tubular columns made of carbon fibre measuring 31 metres high. The columns have a circular section with a diameter of 250 mm and a thickness of 20 mm. These columns are positioned on the ground at the vertices of an octagon located within a 4.50-metre circle in diameter at its base and 4.00 metres in diameter at its crest.

The connection, a horizontal stiffening between the eight pipes, materialises through a dual system:

    • 4 horizontal octagon-shaped rings composed of fibreglass pipes measuring 190 mm in diameter and 20 mm thick, arranged every 6.00 metres.
    • 5 octagon-shaped horizontal forged panels, made from "sandwich" panels measuring 0.20 metres thick, arranged every 6.00 metres.

The work won the award for innovation in design and materials, within the category of infrastructure in the international JEC World 2016 Innovation Awards.
