    Puhoi-Warkworth Highway

The public-private partnership (PPP) project consists of an 18.5 km, four-lane extension of the Northern Motorway (also known as SH1) from the Johnston Hills tunnels to the north of Warkworth.

This is the first section in the Ara Tühono – Puhoi-to-Wellsford corridor, a strategic route for the country’s transport network, key to connecting the Northland with the triangle formed by the cities of Auckland, Waikato and Tauranga. The project is part of a state programme to improve passenger and freight transport between some of New Zealand’s largest urban centres. The Puhoi-Warkworth highway is expected to open to traffic in 2022.
