  • The company received the award for the Best Project Design Abroad for the Follo Line in Norway and an Honourable Mention for the Best Municipal Public Work for the Los Molinos-El Casar pedestrian link

ACCIONA Construction was recognized at the 10th edition of the Spanish Association of Civil Engineers’ Madrid Divisional Awards Ceremony.

In the category of Best Project Design Abroad, ACCIONA received an award for the Follo Line rail tunnels in Norway, twin 20-km tunnels that will connect the city of Oslo with the town of Ski, making them the longest in all of Scandinavia. The company alsoreceived an Honourable Mention in the category of Best Municipal Public Work for the Los Molinos-El Casar pedestrian link project in Getafe, Madrid.

The Spanish Association of Civil Engineers’ Madrid Divisional Awards Ceremony was held at the Casa de América venue in Madrid on 3 November and was attended by several representatives from the Spanish construction and engineering sectors.

Follo Line, Best Project Design Abroad

The awards panel recognized the technical quality and design of ACCIONA’s work in Norway as part of the Follo line project: the largest transport infrastructure initiative undertaken in Norway to date. The panel also recognized the project's sustainability criteria and its contribution to improving quality of life in the area.

ACCIONA Engineering designed, calculated and drafted the project, which includes significant innovations. The high-speed rail tunnels are being built with four tunnel-boring machines (TBMs) operated simultaneously, something never before done in Norway. Two of the machines are tunnelling north towards Oslo and another two are working south towards Ski.

The project involves conventional tunnelling methods for two caverns for the assembly of the TBMs, rescue tunnels, an escape tunnel and two transport tunnels, as well as all rail-related installations.

The new high-speed line will cut travel time between Oslo and Ski in half (from 22 minutes to 11 minutes), making it an efficient, safe and eco-friendly transportation alternative. It will connect residential and business areas, and it will provide greater capacity for freight train transit.

ACCIONA Engineering included significant improvements and innovations in the design of the project. A continuous monitoring procedure was created to provide information at all times on strain deformation in the excavations, as well as a new database for systematic document delivery and access.

A monitoring and control system was also developed for the four TBMs for first-hand information on construction progress and to propose complementary measures and solutions, while the new method of systematically applying pre-grouting makes it possible to alter the initial underground excavation conditions as little as possible, reducing the economic and scheduling impact of work stoppage.

“Los Molinos-El Casar” pedestrian link, Honourable Mention in the Best Municipal Public Works category

The pedestrian link project between the “Los Molinos” housing estate and “El Casar” station has reduced travel times and eliminated the barriers that users had to overcome in moving between these two points through pedestrian underpasses or overpasses.

The work done by ACCIONA Construction included building a new access under the tracks from the park-and-ride facilities at the “Los Molinos” estate and the connection from there to the vestibule at the “El Casar” Metro station in Getafe, Madrid.
