The first lighthouse in the world to be constructed from composite materials.
The IABSE Outstanding Structure Awards are one of the most prestigious awards in the construction sector.
The International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE) has shortlisted the Valencia lighthouse, the first in the world to be wholly constructed from composite materials, as one of the finalist projects in the Outstanding Structure Awards.
Every year, these internationally prestigious awards recognise the most remarkable, innovative and creative structures in the world, based on criteria such as sustainability and respect for the environment.
The awards will be presented on 21 September in Vancouver (Canada) at the 39th IABSE Symposium Vancouver 2017.
The new Port of Valencia lighthouse constructed by ACCIONA from a design by the Infrastructure Manager of the Valencia Port Authority, Ignacio Pascual, represented a major milestone for the infrastructure sector after it was installed in 2015.
The structure of the 32-metre high lighthouse was entirely manufactured from composite materials developed at ACCIONA Construction’s R&D Centre. These materials, which are lighter and more resistant than traditional materials, are more resilient to exposure in the maritime environment, they require less maintenance and have a lower environmental impact.
The use of composite materials optimised the construction process, making it quicker, more sustainable and environmentally friendly. This technique shortened the execution time of the works by more than 40% and reduced the pollution normally associated with constructing this type of infrastructure compared to traditional methods by one fifth. .
Furthermore, the use of composite materials will prolong the lighthouse’s useful life by making it more corrosion resistant, which is especially important in wet or maritime environments.
EThe new lighthouse is equipped with ten solar panels and a vertical wind turbine, which significantly reduce its energy consumption, as well as incorporating LED technology visible at 25 nautical miles.
ACCIONA is a pioneer in the design, production and installation of composite materials in all types of infrastructures, such as walkways, bridges or docks.
Its developments in this field have received important awards, including the JEC Innovation Awards World on four occasions: Valencia lighthouse (2016); the first building façade panel with biological composites as part of the EU Biobuild project (2015), the Cuenca footbridge (2012) and the Almuñécar footbridge in the Madrid Río Park (2011).
These awards are in addition to the European Business Award for the Environment 2014 in the “Product and Services for Sustainable Development” category awarded by the Directorate-General for the Environment of the European Commission to the project to extend the Puerto del Rosario (Fuerteventura) with composite caissons.
