ACCIONA Construction has been awarded the contract to renovate the offices of the Department of Education and Culture of the regional government of Asturias. The building was constructed in 1974 and will receive significant upgrades in safety, accessibility and habitability.
The contract is worth approximately €1.95 million and the works will be completed within 18 months.
The project will focus on improving safety and accessibility in the 7215 m2, seven-storey administrative building on Oviedo’s centrally located Plaza de España.
Renovations include improving lighting in hallways, removing steps and installing adapted handrails. A new lift will also be built to access the sixth floor, while the two existing lifts will be refurbished.
Safety improvements in the event of building fire include shelter spaces for people with reduced mobility on the landings of each floor and the installation of fire doors.
The building’s energy efficiency will also be improved. The current insulation is outdated and there is no energy provided from renewable sources. The existing diesel-fuelled boiler will be replaced with a gas condensing version, and LED light fixtures will be installed.
