ACCIONA Engineering has received the “FIDIC Award of Merit” at the international FIDIC Awards 2017, presented every year by the International Federation of Consulting Engineers, for its design project for the high-speed rail platform of the Venta de Baños junction in Palencia.
The FIDIC Awards, which are open to projects from all around the world, were presented on 2 October at the FIDIC International Infrastructure Conference, which this year was held in Jakarta (Indonesia).
The awards recognise outstanding engineering projects around the globe for their innovation, quality and professional excellence; their support for the principles of transparency and integrity; and their sustainability and commitment to the environment. Every year the "Award of Special Merit" and "Award of Merit" are presented to exceptional projects, in addition to the "Outstanding Project of the Year" award.
The ACCIONA Engineering project selected by FIDIC consists of the final construction design of 24 km of track of the high-speed rail triangle (up to 350 km/h) that connects the Madrid-Segovia-Valladolid line with Asturias, León, Santander, Burgos and the “Y Vasca” line.
This large-scale project includes construction of six viaducts spanning a combined length of around 3,600 metres; two pergola-type structures at railway crossings; a 500-metre artificial tunnel; and 17 underpasses and 6 overpasses.
The project also involves the partial restructuring of the 150-track rail yard of the Venta de Baños station, which the route of the new high-speed line will pass through, and refurbishment of a two-storey workshop covering more than 2,300 m2.This building serves the Venta de Baños station rail yard consisting of switching zones and train sidings as well as electromechanical facilities, with a capacity for more than 100 carriages.
ACCIONA Engineering was also recognised at the 2016 edition of the FIDIC Awards, receiving the “FIDIC Award of Merit” for its project entitled “New Ring Road West of Málaga. Section: AP-7 Highway – Intersection MA-417. Churriana Tunnel”.
