ACCIONA has taken part in Panama’s National Reforestation Day, in line with its strategy of sustainability and its commitment to improving people´s quality of life, and to promote the commitment of its employees to sustainable development.
This activity, promoted by the Million Hectare Alliance, was created in June 2014 to work towards the country's goal of reforesting one million hectares over the next 20 years. Promotors include the Panamanian Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture (CCIAP), the National Association for the Preservation of Nature (ANCON) and the Panamanian Association of Reforestry and Associated Agents (ANARAP), together with the National Government of Panama through the Ministry of the Environment (MIAMBIENTE) and the Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA).
The Loma Cová ACCIONA – Meco Consortium provided volunteers during this event, as part of the the Pan-American Highway extension and renovation project, on the section between the Puente de las Américas bridge and Vía Centenario in Arraiján. Specifically, it provided 6 portable toilets for this activity and 20 volunteers in the Altos de Campana Nature Reserve in Chica de Chame. Some 2,000 pine saplings (Pinus caribaea) were planted in the reserve at a distance of 5 x 5 over an area of five hectares.
The idea arose after reflecting on the impact of the project and how ACCIONA could improve it, taking into consideration the needs of each region and the best way to help meet those needs.
This initiative, promoted and coordinated by the Consortium’s environmental officer, is another example of ACCIONA's effective commitment to sustainability, with the global aim of helping to reduce environmental impacts. It is also a valuable tool in generating commitment among employees and raising their awareness of sustainable development.
