On October 2, 2019, David Madrigal, director of the engineering area of the construction business of ACCIONA, opened the launch meeting of the WEDISTRICT project (smart and local renewable Energy DISTRICT heating and cooling solutions for sustainable living) led by ACCIONA.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the 21 partners from 9 European countries that make up the project and the representative of the European commission, presenting the different technologies and actions that will be implemented during the 42 months of the project.
The WEDISTRICT consortium, with a budget of € 19M, will execute, over the next 3 and a half years, the design, integration and demonstration of renewable technologies for the production of heat and cold in urban networks (district heating and cooling), demonstrating that it is possible its operation with 100% renewable energy sources such as solar energy, thermal storage, geothermal biomass, waste heat reuse and solar cold technologies, all managed through an advanced control and monitoring system.
During the project, 4 installations will be carried out to demonstrate the technologies developed in real scenarios: In Spain, in the Alcalá de Henares technology park, with the installation of a 1.25 MW pilot plant with advanced panel technologies concentration solar and a biomass boiler, which will provide 100% renewable heat and cold supply, to industries in the area; in Poland, where a 1.5 MW coal plant will be replaced by biomass boilers, which together with a photovoltaic system, will supply heat and electricity from renewable sources to 20 homes; in Bucharest, on the university campus of the polytechnic university, where geothermal and solar technologies will be installed to supply 80kW of renewable energy to a campus building; and in Sweden, where a hydrogen-powered fuel cell will be used for heat generation from waste heat recovery at a data processing center (CPD) that will supply 100% renewable heat to the existing heat network.
With this project, ACCIONA reinforces its strategy in the use of innovative technologies to achieve the objective of decarbonization of cities, by integrating 100% renewable energy generation technologies.
